In May 2021, HI Friends began work to create a Dementia Friendly Community as recognised and supported by the Alzheimer’s Society. A dementia-friendly community is a city, town or village where people with dementia are understood, respected and supported. The initial project was known as “Project Forget-me-not” but, recognising the partnership between HI Friends and outside agencies, it was renamed “HI Forget-me-not” and it is under this name that activities for those living with dementia, their carers and the wider community are now offered.

HI Friends employ a Dementia Support Co-ordinator to lead activities for those affected, and work with individuals, their carers and families. We run the Forget-me-not Luncheon Club, which meets at the Saint Andrew’s Centre from 11.30am-1.30 pm every other Thursday. This is open to anyone with dementia or memory loss and their carer, or other support worker. Lunch is provided by the Centre and costs £8.00 per head. Please contact 07934 817316 to book for the lunch (or if you want to know more about it).

Jan Payne is the HI Forget-me-not project leader and is primarily working on getting businesses, organisations, social groups, schools and youth groups on board to make Histon and Impington a Dementia Friendly Community. Jan also leads the Forget-me-not Journey Support Group, which aims to help those living with dementia (or caring for someone who does) to meet and share concerns, ideas, and find community in a relaxed and sympathetic environment. The Forget-me-not Journey Support Group meets weekly on a Tuesday afternoon, from 2.00-3.00 pm at the Salvation Army Hall, Impington Lane. If you or your organisation would like to know more about the Dementia Friendly Community or the Forget-me-not Journey, please contact jan@hifriends.org.uk

There are always further opportunities offered in the HI Friends programme of events which include people with memory loss, including the Thursday Together gatherings. These will be listed on this website as they occur.
